Shaer Singer from North Bend, OR

A little about my musical act and talents... One of my first memories was as a four years old in church. The minister asked me to "give us a song" and so I walked up, turned around and sang "Jesus Loves Me" and then "Jesus Loves the Little Children". (Another Spontaneous Production.) I think I had piano back-up, but we are talking more than 50 years ago, so that part is a little hazy! Since then, I have always had a love for singing and am ready to perform at any time, for anyone. My public speaking skills were non-existent until I joined Toastmasters, now a story and a joke or two livens up the act. While living on a sailboat in Ko Olina, Oahu for five years, my guitar skills were honed and polished by studying and practicing Slack Key Guitar every evening before dinner on the "fantail". My goal at the beginning was to play well enough that folks would stay and listen when the guitar was tuned down. Ki Ho Alu means to slack the keys, and there are many tunings. Most of them are what is called "open" and the most popular is the Taro Patch tuning, or DGDGBD. I have since had the honor and the privilege to perform on stage with Hawaiian artist and Grammy Winner, Ledward Kaapana. He loves country and folk music also, so we have a great time playing guitar while I sing and play a few of my favorites. Of course, we also play ukelele and sing Hawaiian and 50's songs. Another fun thing for me is playing the Farmers' Markets. I love to "jam" and invite passersby to join in the songs they know. My repertoire includes a full set of instrumental Slack Key guitar, an hour or more of folk and country songs, interspersed with accompanying mandolin and uke tunes. I play requests when they are widely known, popular tunes, especially "oldies". I bring everything needed and can play acoustic with no "mic" or amp in a quiet place, and have the ability to perform with amplification, if needed, with battery powered equipment.
