About Vendor

Johnny Mason, a purveyor of Country and Gospel songs from "Way Back When" was born in 1942 in the textile mill village of Glendale, SC. His father was a native of the Blue Ridge Mountain area of Pisgah Forest, NC, his mother a native of the Great Smokey Mountain area of Cove Creek, NC, and his grandfather was born and grew up on the Cherokee Indian Reservation of North Carolina. This heritage provided an exposure to old time mountain, gospel, country and western music and created a love for this music that would continue for a lifetime. He got his first guitar as a Santa Clause present at the age of five and by the time he was nine was starting to play and sing at local "Barn Dance" shows in the Spartanburg area. Johnny was truly "Country when country wasn't cool". Having won a scholarship to Clemson College, he enrolled in the fall of 1960 and earned his spending money by hitch hiking home on week ends to perform at a square dance venue known as The Red Barn. This earned him the nickname of "Hayseed" among his college buddies. In 1966, Johnny organized a band known as "The Johnny-O's" which continued with the same personnel for over twelve years playing throughout the southeastern states. It was during this time that he became known as "The Mouth of The South". Major achievements for Johnny and The Johnny-O's included opening for numerous country acts, including Del Reeves, The Wilburn Brothers, Freddy Hart and Conway Twitty. When The Johnny-O's decided to each go their own way, Johnny became the front man and eventual leader of a group know as "The Pride of Dixie" and remained with them until 1984 when he began a part time solo musical career while concentrating on his chosen vocation of Construction Management. He retired from a career in Construction Management in 2004 and created a One Man Show called "Country Way Back When" singing country, bluegrass and gospel music ranging from the 1930's through the mid 1980's while playing guitar and using computer generated pre-recorded backup tracks. For an entertaining event (RV Parks, Rally's, Parties, Festivals, Sales Promotions, Conventions, Fund Raisers, Fair's, etc.) featuring songs and styles seldom covered by artists today, contact "The Mouth of The South". No cocktail lounges, bars, taverns, etc. please. However, private parties serving alcoholic beverages will be considered.
