After years of playing, teaching, and performing, Phyllis Hoffman Platt is the name Kansas Citians associate with Professional Harpist. Phyllis is an extremely gifted harpist who loves sharing her music with the public. She is a wonderful and entertaining presence when performing as a soloist or in ensemble. Phyllis plays anything from classical to contemporary, from Irish, Scottish to Yiddish In addition, she is happy to do music that is a special request. On one occasion a Bride and Groom were very involved in Gaming. They wanted some music from the games they played as the background music and processionals for their outdoor wedding. She was able to do this, which delighted the couple on their very special day. Her beautiful style of playing makes her a favorite for brides-to-be when making their wedding plans. Her music creates the perfect atmosphere for all special occasions. Phyllis began studying harp at the age of five and the piano since the age of four.She is a gifted musician with over 35 years of memorable musical moments. She is classically trained, but is also at ease performing the latest popular, jazz and Celtic styles. After attending Brandeis University and earning her degree from the University of Kansas, she returned to her hometown of Kansas City. She has played with the Kansas City Philharmonic, Kansas City Symphony, the Billy Taylor Trio and John Tesh among others. Phyllis performs on a custom made German Gold harp that is one of very few in this country. It is set up internally for amplification with her professional sound system. This allows her to play for intimate to large gatherings and to be heard, no matter what the guest size or background sounds. Phyllis performs as a duo with a Flutist, Violinist or Cellist. In addition, her Fiori trio consists of Harp, Flute and Cello. She also accompanies singers. As an artist, arranger, recording artist and lecturer-presenter she combines inventiveness and virtuosity. Her recording "Harp Artistry" has received national distribution and received the following praise from National Media's Adam Victor Christenson: "The artist plays as gently as a breeze stirring the lace at a window. Great Stuff!" Selected as a Touring Artist for the Kansas Arts Commission, her performances are well known in the Midwest. She continues to perform on a regular basis at the finest hotels, restaurants, weddings, plus corporate and charity funded events. Dedicated to expanding the knowledge of the harp and its repertoires developed and taught a course on the History, Development and Music of the Harp that was adopted as part of the University of Kansas' Osher Course Series. She has been an adjunct harp professor at the University of Kansas and Johnson County Community College. Many harpists, both young and young at heart can credit her with teaching them the harp, as she has maintained an active teaching studio for over thirty years, Dedicated to expanding the knowledge of the harp and its repertoire, she developed and taught a course on the History, Development and Music of the Harp that was adopted as part of the University of Kansas' Osher Course Series. In addition, she has been an Adjunct Professor at Kansas University and Johnson County Community College. Numerous students have received both partial and full college and university scholarships after studying harp with her. She also founded the Harp Academy, a Summer harp program that was part of the sell-known Midwestern Music and Arts Camp at K.U. She attended Brandeis University and received her Bachelor's from the University of Kansas with Graduate hours at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Her teachers include Margaret Ling, Eileen Dishinger and Susann McDonald. Her experience includes being elected to two terms as Midwestern Regional Director on the National Board of Directors of the American Harp Society.
