About Vendor

Bob Deck grew up on oldies radio, worshipping the sounds of The Beatles, The Zombies, and The Beach Boys as a kid of the 1970s. In the '80's, skateboarding provided an escape from the post-modern nightmare of his Wichita, Kansas, surroundings, and naturally led to a love of punk rock and alternative music. By the time he escaped to Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas, to study graphic design, he was a full-fledged music junkie, eventually sharing his diverse musical discoveries on his “7-inch Show” on the college radio station KJHK. Upon graduating, he remained in Lawrence, designing album covers, flyers and posters for many of the bands in the local music scene, and co-published a rock'n'roll zine called “micromag.” In 1994, Bob purchased a vintage Slingerland drum kit and taught himself to play by emulating the sounds of his favorite garage bands. His work as drummer for the '60's-inspired garage punk band The Hefners (whose first album was produced by the legendary Tim Kerr), took him to Europe for two tours around the turn of the millennium. Back in Lawrence, he continued DJ-ing on the pirate radio station KAW on his “Rock'n'Roll Radio” show, before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, to further his graphic design career and to pursue a masters degree in Integrated Marketing Communications (also from KU). Eventually, his love of modernism and California sunshine led to a move to the mid-century modern mecca of Palm Springs, California, where he continues as a freelance graphic designer. Under the moniker “Bobby California,” named after a song by Curt Boettcher (The Millennium, Sagittarius), he DJs in local bars and at parties, focusing on the sun-soaked sounds of Southern California sunshine pop, '60s garage rock, soft-psych, lounge, exotica and other types of vintage music.
