Hot Horns is an award winning, internationally acclaimed, professional touring brass ensemble. Hot Horns is also the premier educational ensemble of its kind. The brass ensemble is made up of some of the areas finest Mid-West musicians. Hot Horns is launching into a new and exciting musical journey, forging an innovative, entertaining way to performing all brass quintet music. Brass quintet music has always been performed with the standard brass quintet instrumentation – 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. Hot Horns is raising the bar to a superior level by performing brass quintet music ranging from “Bach to Rock” with non-traditional brass quintet instruments. Saxophones and Clarinets have typically been reserved for woodwind groups. Hot Horns has inserted Indiana's most collaborative brass musicians that double on these woodwind instruments. The brass ensemble added these instrumental forces to offer a more traditional sound in the “Pops” brass quintet music that one would expect to hear in a large “Big Band.” Hot Horns ambition is to change “Sound” through instrumentation so the listener will have a unique and different from the normal aural experience, while preserving the quality, complexity, and excitement of all brass quintet music. Hot Horns is affiliated with several different Educational Arts Councils from Coast to Coast. The educational experience will be enhanced by the addition of the Saxophone and Clarinet. Hot Horns by keeping the traditional brass quintet format (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba) can now take the student / teacher educational interactive experience to a higher level. Hot Horns can now utilize and demonstrate to the students who may not want to play a brass instrument, what types of woodwinds there are, and how they are used in conjunction with the brass instruments, and percussion. These new elements when joined together enable Hot Horns to extend their reach to additional students and expand their teaching capabilities through masterclasses and educational performances. Hot Horns mission, is to preserve and perform to the highest level, all varieties of brass quintet music ranging from “Bach to Rock.” Hot Horns professionalism, musicianship, technical virtuosity, entertainment, integrity, and education are unmatched and unchallenged. Hot Horns performances will leave you astonished and amazed. Hot Horns is a formidable force in the music world! In addition to its extensive concert activities, formerly known as Bay Street Brassworks released their first CD in 2002, titled "Fresh Off The Boat – Folk Music From Around The World", and their second CD "American Escapades" in 2006. Their third titled CD "Brass on Fire" was released in October, 2011. These recordings have expanded the reach of the ensemble into homes and schools from Florida to Colorado and from Maryland to Korea. Among its numerous awards, the Hot Horns received the Grand Prize at the New York Brass Conference International Brass Quintet Competition in 2003, and two Career Development grants from the Peabody Conservatory. "The PERFORMANCE WAS FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC! It was beyond amazing – the kids are STILL buzzing about it! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thanks a million! " -Jodi Bulmer The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, North Carolina
