People of all ages love to dance to this band, so be prepared to get out of your seat. Blu Ja'nk means Bluesy Jazz and Funk. That best describes our cross over genre. I was even drawn to the dance floor, thanks for sharing the music.” — John Starinovich, Art and Garden Tour of NE CT. ************* While we play a few recognizable covers (Son Seals/Phish's Funky Bitch, Allman's Elizabeth Reed, Maceo Parker's Pass the Peas, Little Milton/John Mayall's Grits Ain't Groceries, The Meter's Cissy Strut) to name a few, most of our songs have been chosen for the feel and groove from artists like The Funky Meters, Taj Mahal, Bernard Allison, Spyro Gyra , Jimmy McGriff , and Jimmy Smith, and are not as well-known. We also perform original material. While we play some jazz tunes (Miles, Art Blakely, Kombo, Boney James, Kenny Burell, Herby Hancock), we are far from a straight jazz quartet. Our blend of Bluesy Jazz and Funk is a truly unique sound. Each instrument is from a different musical family. The music is built around Lon's B3 organ sound, always played through a Leslie. With decades of bass guitar performing, Lon and his left hand think and sound like a soulful electric bass player. Lon also covers most of the vocals. John's drum work is completely funky and his wide "pocket" makes everyone want to dance. Larry's guitar work comes from a blues background. Chandler's sax is more than just a lead instrument. He plays in a jazz band, hip-hop band and a pep band (believe it or not). Each musical voice and genre blend to form a uniquely warm and funky blend of Bluesy Jazz and Funk.
